The Hortus Botanicus Leiden and the National Herbarium of the Netherlands (NHN), Leiden University branch (NHN-L), PITA research group, are offering:

2 PhD Positions (fulltime, 38 hours per week)

The PITA group is an active, internationally oriented research group with a strong focus on the flora of South-East Asia. Our research facilities include a rich collection of living plants in the botanical garden (collections with Orchidaceae, Apocynaceae (Dischida, Hoya), myrmecophytic Rubiaceae, and carnivorous plants) and the Herbarium collection which is one of the leading collections in Europe and par excellence useful for anatomical and molecular/evo-devo research (incl. ancient DNA lab), SEM and TEM laboratories.

Who fits the shoe?

You must have a degree (drs./MSc) in Biology and have a strong interest and experience in plant taxonomy preferably including molecular and or SEM/TEM techniques. To obtain one of the available positions you have to write a two A4 research proposal, based on the collections available in the botanical garden and the NHN. As a person you are a driven and self-confident scientist and you have excellent analytical and communicational skills.

We offer you an appointment for a period of one year with a prolongation up to four years. The appointment must lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. The gross monthly salary is 1956EUR,- in the first year and increases progressively each year to 2502EUR,- in the fourth year in accordance to the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten).
